Monday: Project development, access studios, action targets from last critique, contextual research for Sony World Photography exhibition

w/c 18th April

Tuesday: Your FMP is due in just 6 weeks time. You have the 2nd graded critique tomorrow. You should be working on developing your Powerpoint Presentation and editing work.

Review your SOI timetable and make annotations – photograph this and place in your reflective journal. Update your SOI timetable by making note of any changes, amendments, and additions. Are you on track?! Be honest with your annotations.

Reflective Journal – you should be continuing your reflective journal independently and on a regular basis. Here are some talking points and considerations:

Describe your Easter Half-term. What did you do? For yourself as well as for your project? How did you “recharge” or relax? Explain one positive of your break and one potential negative of your time off. Looking forward to this week and your peer reviews, how do you feel about showing work and receiving feedback? How do you think your peers will receive your work? Is your work starting to communicate via images?

Project Development – Producing, editing and blogging your project as per your SOI. Ensuring that all research is presented and you are following the FLOW.

EXHIBITION – don’t forget you need to attend 1 INDEPENDENT exhibition as part of your FMP. This should be presented on your FMP page, Unit 8. You will then summarize this to your peers in your final critique.

Wednesday: Critiques, reflective writing, project development.

Approx: 9:30 Rosa; 9:45 Malavika; 10:00 Megan; 11:20 Yasmin; 11:35 Emerson; 11:50 Jaime

Record feedback from peers and present in your reflective journal. Explain, describe and REFLECT on the feedback you were given – how have your peers received and responded to your work? How do you feel about the feedback given? Explain how you will use this feedback to develop your project over the next few weeks.

w/c 27th March

Monday: You should be well underway with your FMP with shoots completed and action plans completed. At this stage you should have presented on your blog:

  • research and discussion on how the artists/references are helping you to develop your project.
  • Action plans, Shoots, contact sheets, evaluations & developmental work
  • Thinking and planning for your next shoot

Targets:

  • Planning to go to your exhibition over Easter
  • Crit 1 on Wednesday – powerpoint guides on Unit 8
  • Reflective Journal Entry:

Reflective Journal entry – make your first entry in their reflective journal. You should discuss the following:

** What were your FMP starting points?
** What have you done so far to get your FMP off and running? Are you on track according to your timetable and project idea? Are you behind, why? What are your next steps and goals for this week.
** Explain/describe your first shoot
** What are you doing over Easter Break – project and non-project related.
** Explain any changes to your project, why they have occurred, and how you have dealt with them.

Tuesday: Complete presentation for Crit 1. Post to Unit 8 with a clear title and date.

Wednesday: Critique presentations and peer feedback. Nominate someone to record your feedback and comments. You will need to post all the feedback (the good, bad, ugly!) that you have received on your blog, titled PEER REVIEW & FEEDBACK. You also need to REFLECT on the peer feedback in your REFLECTIVE JOURNAL by discussing how you feel about that feedback; is the feedback helpful to the development of your project?; does the feedback take you in a new direction?; you must react to the feedback in some way, you can’t ignore it, so what are you going to do in response to the feedback? Will you approach your shooting different? Try something new? Go somewhere new? Incorporate a technique or editing process? Be honest and critical of your work, feedback and next steps.

CRITS: Wednesday morning. Post PowerPoint to your blog. Post all feedback – peers and lecturer to your reflective journal and discuss how you feel about the feedback, how you will use the feedback and the results that you have had when you did re-shoots, or made changes.

Your FMP is due Tuesday 17th at 12pm. This is the last working week for your FMP! You will present your work for final crit on Wednesday – the crit power point is under Unit 8. By the end of this week you should meet all the targets of your own statement of intent! You should complete all shooting, editing, writing, analysis, etc. You should complete all blog work and the final written evaluation. You should ensure that you have produced AT LEAST WEEKLY REFLECTIVE JOURNAL ENTRIES! You Reflective Journal must be separate and in addition to your blog.

Reflective Journal Questions:

Look over your original FMP timetable. Make annotations in pencil to note what you have and have not completed to date. Why has this happened – both for meeting and/or missing weekend targets? Why are you ahead or behind? What will you do to catch up on missed targets, or if you have finished ahead of time what can you do to as extra for your FMP?

Here is a stress test to help you evaluate your state of mind: stress test . Reflect on your answers. Use the guide below to fill in gaps in your reflective journal.

6265419_orig

  • The journal is about you—so write in the first person.
  • Got questions? If so, write them down!
  • Found an answer you don’t want to forget? Write it down.
  • Keep your to-do lists in the journal. Also record the steps you performed if they are not part of the action plan. Checklists also belong in journals.
  • Keep the journal on your person at all times while performing study tasks and observations. Think of it this way—if it is not handy when you need it, then what good is it?
  • Record ideas of value to you.
  • Use the back inside cover for special notes to yourself.
  • If you notice cultural issues emerging in your study, record it!
  • Got a new idea for your research or for your next AR cycle? Write it down!
  • Did you screw up? If so, record your mistake.
  • Did you sense a power distance while meeting with stakeholders? If so, write about how you felt and what you observed.
  • Did you make a mistake while collecting data? If so, you better leave yourself a note in the journal.
  • Did you have a new, positive, confusing, negative, or utterly befuddling experience while researching? Well, write it down!
  • Did you sense emotion from yourself or a stakeholder? Was it relevant to the moment in which you were conducting the study? If so, record it. Emotions are part of being human and are a very valuable component to action research.
  • Did you have a moment where you were unprepared or felt like a total idiot during the study? If so, good! Record that moment and think about what you need to learn.
  • Make sure you have a safe place to keep your journal.
  • Never let anyone else write in your journal.

What have you experimented with? Camera based or editing? What have you learned that you didn’t know before? How have you challenged your own image making to make your skills and your images stronger. You have experimented with long exposure today, 120mm and solar print. 3. End with the resolution that solves the ‘problem’ and shows the happy ending. (=Final 1/4 of the story)
  4. Consider the sound that you will add to each scene or sequence. Music is the “easy” option as you add a song to the entire film. However, you can achieve higher marks if you consider more appropriate sound effects to illustrate your story like foot steps, booms, bangs, scratching, etc … adding the appropriate sound to the image that is being shown! These can be found online or for EVEN HIGHER MARKS … make and record them yourselves! See some ideas on Unit 7 page.

Present and analyse research examples. Identify “do’s” and “don’t” for stop motion.

Complete your shoot action plans detailing what you need to complete shoots.

Begin to shoot if ready. Remember you should aim for a minimum of 20-30 seconds. Higher achieving students will aim for longer.

Practice using editing software.

Wednesday:

1:1’s, 9-10am. 10-1:20 Studio and Digital camera introduction and Unit 6 start

Start unit 6 on Wednesday – bring digital cameras

w/c 4th January 2016

Wednesday:

Unit 5 Completion – refer to previous posts below for targets. Last darkroom access/toning/shooting day.

Tuesday:

Intro to brief and project requirements.

10+/- frame stop-motion practice. Upload all still images from the sequence as a grid to blog to show the development. Explain process.

Complete research – chose 3 stop-motion animations (preferably photographic) and embed them onto your blog under unit 7.

  1. Explain the story/script in your own words. What is the narrative being told, who are the characters, what is the theme, what is achieved, is it dramatic, humorous, scary, etc. What happens?
  2. Does it have an industry context? For instance, is it a TV advert, a music video, a short or long length film?
  3. Take a guess (or find the answers) of how many photographs were used in the making of the animations. Remember that typically there are 24 frames per second in video.
  4. Identify the strengths and weakness of the stop motion – take screen shots of import scenes/moments to illustrate this. Does the animation run smoothly? Is there any big jumps or gaps in the frames? Are the image exposures or framing of the film consistent? If not, what do you think the faults are.
  5. Do you like it? Why? What does it make you feel? How do you react to it?

Begin to form your ideas and script, post on your blog. Idea and written script (400-500 words) needs to be completed by the end of week 2 (12th January)

Shooting will happen no later than week 3 and editing for at least the final 2 weeks of the project.

Independent idea development – you need to produce 8 – 12 images under the theme of constructed imagery and need to create outcomes that are: Portraits/Self-Portraits, Botanical Forms, Architectural and Surreal. What do you want to communicate with this batch of imagery that you are producing? Can you make personal, political, cultural, or humorous statements?

For those that use Pinterest, here is a link to an ideas page:

Tuesday: Further digital designs. Geometric Portrait task – Handout under Unit 5 Constructed Imagery. Complete one geometric portrait with the sample image. Save and upload this to your blog, explain process and what you learned; evaluate your result – what value does this add to the image? How does it complicate, confuse, alter the meaning or feeling?

Complete this task on your own 3 times with new, original portraits. Produce several portraits or self-portraits on your own, and complete this task again. Upload all work to your blog with explanation and evaluations. Screen shot steps for at least 1 and include those to help explain your learning.

Is this a task you could you for your final outcomes?

** The analysis for your research will require you to explain the context of the images and/or body of work. Context refers to what something means, or the other information that viewers need to understand the images. You will need to research into reviews, critiques, and explanations from the artist to understand the context. What is being communicated in the body of work?

Google Map research of Canary Wharf

Tuesday:

  1. Completing blog for assessment if necessary – Paul, Dylan, Finlay
  2. If they have already had their assessment and are on referral, they need to complete referral work – sheets have been emailed to them
  3. A lot of the blog work has spelling/grammar errors and some people have had trouble uploading photos, etc. If there are any errors on units 1&2 this needs to be fixed – whether they received a pass or not
  4. If they passed their assessment and their blog is free of ALL errors, they can look at Unit 4 Urban project and start to develop ideas/research. It is found here: https://photography1westthamescollege.wordpress.com/unit-4-intro-to-materials-processes-and-technical-skills/urban/

Monday:

Tuesday will be assessment for your Abstract Assignment – Units 1 & 2. Assessment will carry on into Wednesday in case I can not finish 1:1 feedback.

You should use personal and vocational time to complete your blog and all requirements listed below. Wednesday we will start Units 3 & 4.

Monday creative task: re-imagine your photographs in an abstract way by slicing strips of your images and putting back together.

Tuesday:

Develop blog from this weeks shoots. Post images in gallery, evaluate images and define the visual element.

Peer evaluation of galleries – record peer feedback on your sheet. If you are unable to finish this for all categories, complete at home with friends or family. Scan/Photo peer evaluation sheet and post at end of blog under ‘peer reflection’.

Chose your final 2 images for each categories of visual elements. At the very top of your blog create a “Final Images” gallery. Post your 14 images here – remember that these should be abstract images as well as defining the visual element. Use your peer feedback to help you make decisions.

Complete final evaluation in time for assessment – Post this directly under your final images gallery.

Handouts on image evaluations and final project evaluations. Use your peer evaluation to help you complete this.

Monday:

Review of the course calendar – reminder that Assessment for Unit 1&2 is next week on Tuesday. This will consist of 1:1 meeting and review of blog work. Project is marked as Pass/Fail with a short referral period if something is incomplete. Your blog will be assessed as evidence for both Units 1 & 2.

Lectures on Shape,Space, Colour, Tone/Contrast

  1. Define each of the above visual elements (written definition)
  2. Explore each visual element photographically
  3. React to a research or reference image.
  4. Post all good outcomes onto blog as a gallery of images. (Label each gallery as Space, Shape, etc)
  5. Then ultimately you will chose 2 of your best images to visually define each visual elements.
